This sector covers the generation and distribution of power, minimisation of industrial impact on the environment and storage and movement of industrial bulk materials.
Generation of power may be from gas, oil or nuclear as well as renewable resources such as biomass, hydro, wind, wave or solar. Impact on the environment can be reduced by process selection, energy-efficient design, treatment of emissions, efficient management and use of fuels and other consumables. Movement and storage of industrial bulk materials typically involves loading and unloading of shipping, tankers and lorries plus bulk storage of gases such as natural gas, LPG and compressed medical gases; liquids such as Oils and chemicals and Solids such as chemicals, foodstuffs, minerals, and building materials.
Elements of this sector come into all of our process designs. In any design we analyse the project requirements and recommend a solution that is economic, energy efficient and minimises impact on the environment. We are able to quantitatively analyse these factors and present a proven argument for the proposed solution within constraints set by the customer and the minimum legal requirements.
RB Plant Experience – Downstream process project management
We typically get involved at the Front-End Engineering Design stage of downstream process projects for example: Liquids or solids storage depots, removal of contamination from furnace exhaust gases, scrubbing and treatment of chemical fumes, conversion of sludge to biomass fuel, inspection of tank farms and tank farm control systems and cleaning up aqueous effluent for discharge to sewer or water-course. Sometimes our consultancies are simply to frame a problem in relation to its severity, scale, the applicable legislation and the technical options available.
Water-cooled hot-duct design and evaporatively cooled systems
We are expert in hot-duct design, both Water-cooled and evaporatively cooled with heat reclamation. We are well versed in every aspect of energy generation, transfer systems and heat transfer media including steam, high pressure hot water and heat transfer Oils. We have successfully completed feasibility, FEED, Detailed Design and EPCM for numerous downstream fuel storage facilities throughout the UK up to £50m.
We were engaged by WRAP (A government funded organisation helping businesses and individuals reduce waste) to design and construct a prototype plant to process and recycle fibre from paper mill sludge. We also undertook a detailed study on the recycling of glass wool for a leading glass client within the UK. In addition we have completed a number of energy from waste projects and applied novel solutions to a number of projects to improve and reduce emissions. On another project we are designing process plant for a leading metals refinery which will significantly reduce heat losses and provide for great reductions in fuel costs. Numerous studies and design schemes have been prepared for treating furnace and oven exhaust gases including bag-houses and exhaust stacks meeting the applicable environmental emissions requirements.
